Roti Prata ...

Roti Prata, a type of crispy dough often dipped with curry sauces or sometimes with sugar comes in various ways - plain, egg, onion or even cheese.

This popular Indian bread is popular in this region, Singapore and Malaysia. A little oily and fluffy, a good prata is soft yet crispy. With its additional fillings, it can be a filling meal just by taking two pieces of it.

Found in many Indian restaurants or coffee shops, it differs slightly from the North Indian naan, rather similar but not exactly. Good pratas can be found at Causarina Road's Prata Shop. The pratas there are crispy but if you prefer those really fluffy ones, you may try those at Jalan Kayu.

I prefer if served with fish assam curry then the normal one, and no plain ones for me but onion with egg prata. Try it, its delicious.

Attached is a clip on how prata is made. Looks easy? No way.

Duck with salted vegetable...

Just writing about this makes me hungry again despite having lots of it this evening at Godpa's place. Yes, Godpa is sort of a chef who experiments and makes lots of delicious food.

Duck with salted vegetable soup is appetizing. I can take as many as 3 bowls of it and mind you, its big bowls that I am talking about, not your normal rice bowl.

Aren't sure about the origin of this dish but whatever it is, the stomach craves for more.

Crab in Bean Paste and Eggs

Crabs a favourite seafood in this region is cooked in many different ways. Today, let me recommend you a rather unique way of cooking -fried crabs in bean paste and eggs.

Usually not found in restaurants, this is a delicacy whipped up by my godfather. Its taste a little salty but with fresh crabs, the flesh would be soft and tender. The gravy is best mixed with plain rice. Am sure you will take more rice than you usually would as the gravy seems a little addictive.

No complaints when you have crabs at home because you know a clean washroom is always available. You can eat to your heart's desire in comfort. If you are interested in this dish, let me know and we'll arrange a feast at Pasir Ris.

Yet Con Chicken Rice...

Many friends from overseas often like to savour the delicious and ever popular Hainanese chicken rice. Frankly, I have only been bringing them to Boon Tong Kee, a rather popular chain of chicken rice restaurants. I think I found an alternative to their fat and oily chicken rice, now I strongly recommend Yet Con's chicken rice.

Situated just behind a street behind Raffles Hotel, this old looking restaurant proudly displays its 'air-con' sign. Reason being, the shop is so old and not renovated, it still proudly hangs the sign 'air-con restaurant'.

Back to the chicken rice, its not very oily, its tender and soft, smooth and delicious. A must try if you visit Singapore, that's for sure. Besides its aging crew and once awhile grouchy Hainanese boss, its food is definitely inviting.

When you are there, try the BBQ pork as well as its popular Hainanese pork chop. The gravy with the pork chop mixed with rice is surely a favourite with the customers.

Try not to visit the restaurant too late as by 8pm, the chickens get sold out and you will only be left salivating. Perhaps you can try the other alternatives on the street as its popular for Hainanses dishes but surely, Yet Con is the best out there cause if it isn't, HK food celebrity Choi Lan would not have visited them.

Sarawak Laksa ...

If you think only Singaporean laksa is nice, wait till you taste an authentic Sarawakian laksa. Not as spicy as the local laksa, Sarawak's laksa is hard to find in Singapore. Besides it being served at a friend's place in Telok Blangah, there is a coffee shop at Bedok Interchange that serves authentic Sarawak food.

Its taste is rather unique. Not too sure how or what its made of but me being a soup lover, I just think the laksa is much better than those found at Katong. Moreover, it looks healthier to have a bowl of Sarawakian laksa than the Katong laksa. The last time my friends Ellen and Check cooked it, I had close to 6 bowls of it. Yummy.

Ya Kun Kaya toast ...

Mention Ya Kun in Singapore and many will associate it with a crispy, thin and toast bread topped with butter and a type of spread - kaya. Kaya is a type of traditional egg jam often found in Singapore and Malaysia. Its made with a mix of coconut and eggs.

Forget the sinful consequences of butter, Kaya toast is a must try when in Singapore. Am sure the aroma and sweetness of the spread will leave you begging for more.

At Ya Kun, another must try will be the soft boiled eggs. Its big yellow yolk with smooth egg white will stare hard at you as you try to mix both yolk and white. Don't forget to put a little soya sauce and pepper before slurping it down the throat. To end it all, gulp some traditional coffee and allow the caffeine to wash the bad cholestrol away.

Bottled kaya can also be purchased off the shelves from Ya Kun joints should you think that the mere few pieces you consumed is not enough.

Sunset Grill & Pub ... Steak.

Situated in the midst of a former barrack, Sunset Grill & Pub offers diners a fabulous treat of Western cuisine, from really tender Steak to Buffalo Wings of various spice level. Open only from 1630hrs, this is a place to relax if you are not afraid of mosquitoes. For me, indoor is always best.

Their steak cooked best when its medium rare. The meat soft and juicy often melts in the mouth at each bite of the steak. Laced with either mushroom or black pepper sauce, the Tenderloin Steak is often favourite for regular customers.

For those who prefer a lighter meal, the Aglio Olio would best suit you. Simple yet delicious, it offers a tint taste of garlic and herbal spice.

The meal would be complete when you order a hot Clam Chowder soup, buffalo wings and some coleslaw to go along but be careful of the serving portions, it can really fill you up.

For me, this is the best place for steak and a fun filled drive through a part of Singapore that is hardly visited especially when its dark so don't forget to switch on those headlights. ; )
